I'd like to note I'm getting this info from their Patreon [www.patreon.com], and am not in contact with them.
Maybe if they dropped a reduced amount of silk when they expired would be a good balance for a lower amount but with less maintenance so people could choose whether they wanted more maintenance of higher returns. Trying to recall if that already happens but it's been awhile since I actively silk farmed.
Just food for thought.
