Thank you for this mod! Helps a lot to learn and memorize nato symbols
Hoist 2017
@friendlyneighbour Its the common parlance for these kind of icons. Regardless of whether or not they follow the standard.
Sadly this is automatic division icon choice ala HOI4 style, you can't tell it what icon you want for the division
looks like paradox used Niehorster's custom symbols
Aramis 2017
@alchemydrago They were wrong or they didn't explain it properly. Rockets are represented by two upwards pointing chevrons. It is used as a modifier with the symbol for artillery to denote rocket artillery. You can see this in the table of organisation for the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force. The 1st Division 11th Regiment has 1 battalion of wheeled rocket artillery while 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing has a low altitude Air defense battalion. Both have the modifier for rocket in their symbol.
Hi, just found a bug.
The symbol for calvary and paratrooper division on the big map is still the old (vanilla) ones. I didn't check further since I only open the 1939 campaign. The light tank division's symbol is right.
Aram 2017
I'm In A rotc class at my school and they taught us some of the symbols and the upward arrow represents rocket troops
I haven't tried it with blackice, but I'd assume it is compatible since I don't think blackice modifies these files.

Hello
This mod is compatible with blackice

is this millenium dawn compatable?

also, cool mod
@HanziDude

The symbology here is decidedly post-WW2 (late Cold War -> Present to be precise), though it originates in older symbology, primarily from the Anglophone sphere (UK/US).

Historically accurate icons are moddable, just not as well sourced, and with less people being interested in it.
Hanz 2017
Did any nation during WW2 use these symbols, if not, is it possible to create a WW2 icon mod?
"[...] paratroopers using the general "airborne" (implying helicopters) instead of the specific "paratroopers" symbol."

The specific 'parachute' symbol got canned with MIL-STD-2525A/APP-6A in 96/98 and doesn't exist anymore.

"And then there are things like these binoclars [...]"

The recon symbol was already occupied by cavalry (no symbol exists in the standard, closest is infantry with a 'pack animal' modifier), likely based on the usage of similar symbology in previous systems.

--

One thing to note: MIL-STD-2525 (USA) and APP-6 (NATO) have changed a great deal since their inception, even including some elements changing meaning completely.

Newer versions are - in general - more modular, merely defining components and their location, refraining from defining finished symbology almost entirely.

To a lot of us who are used to these (either from RL experience, or old board or computer wargames), NATO icons just feel 'right' - they can provide a massive amount of information about a unit at a glance, much moreso than the stylized 'regular' icons, if done right. Thanks for these Araxiel.
Aweega 2017
Because people (like myself) are more familiar with the actual symbols and find it easier to recognize them.
Not to ♥♥♥♥ on your mod, but I don't understand why people perfer these icons? I get they were in HOI 3 and real life, but the amount of praise gained from making this mod seems extremely high.
It's been a looong time, but I'm pretty sure some countries, potentially related to pdx, uses - or at least did when meeting a diosaur on the street was a real possibility - the same or very similar symbology as used in the game. So, it's not "weird". Why they decided to call them "NATO" markers is anyone's guess though. Presumeably it wasn't meant literally.
In response to what Hoist said, in game they refer to the icons as "NATO icons" if it was not their intention to create NATO icons, why would they call them NATO icons?
Thank F****** God. Or you, Araxiel. Thank you.
This is very great for Millenium Dawn, good work!

When will the storm of steal come out
What Hoist said, works for modern day mods tho.
Hoist 2017
HOI is using a Niehorster dialect variant. NATO wasnt around in -39 so using standardized nato counters would in fact lessen immersion. :)
