Thanks to all Portal 2 players still playing Hammer the Castle, sorry if I made my map hard to play... I wanted to create a challenge. Anyways Merry Christmas; and as a thanks I've uploaded my gameplay video of this map to help players who got stuck. It does contain spoilers.

Screw this level. It's just a pile of death traps with no goal. Nearly everywhere you go turns out to be somewhere you shouldn't have but, a lot of the time, there's no way out & there's never any indication of where you'll get killed for going. Inexcusable. This is, by an incredibly wide margin, the worst Portal level I've played & one of the worst levels I've played in any game ever.

Latest update, I've removed a lot of the animated glass which created a bit of lag, I've added lifts, secret rooms, revised a lot of the destructed props, I've changed the machine on the side of the castle. Removed effects like my snowstorms which didn't work well with the fog. The puzzle challenge has been increased and the player starts without a portal gun, which I've decided to hide around the map.

The original flying chairs confused the player, so I removed them. I did like the chairs as a prop, they were meant to indicate the castle was haunted. They might come back if they will trigger animations on demand.

Updated map, removed chairs, changed a lot of props from overide to hopefully the correct type so they don't all vanish on touch. Puzzle is a lot harder, but I've hidden info bendys to assist on the important areas to head for.

first impression, very nice visuals. there's a few oddities like the glass in windows at the start shattering and rebuilding themselves only the shatter again and a careful look at the 'birds' flying past reveals them to actually be chairs zipping through the air, but I assume those are due to the limitations of the tools
also there WAS a giant metalic structure at one corner of the building (with a big X on the floor) but it vanished when I shot a portal at a nearby wall, along with it a lot of other graphics suddenly vanished from the map, including all of the insides of the castle.

Map is brilliant i loved playing it i stayed allive! and i found the hidden way to get in the door at the end and p_body attacked me :( but i loved the map :)

Definitely needs work. If those problems are fixed though, it would be a decent map to play and explore.

Hi ryanj, the crown is a model that I've placed on the fat turret, it's part of the hammer editors model selection.

Hi CamBen, thanks for the feedback. This whole map was basically a learning experience for me with regards to using valves hammer editor, so in places it's a bit rough. A few of the props aren't working as I wanted which is a source of frustration. The water did cause a lot of problems as I originally deleted the Portal 2 goo in my moat and tried to get the water back after the editor had crashed. I wanted the glass to trigger break but it just does it automatically. I've got lots of revisions of this map but a lot won't build, i did want a lot more cube switches for more gameplay elements.

Easily one of the most badly made maps ive ever seen or played. nonsolid walls, deactivated death fields that kill you, broken rocket turrets, glass constantly breaking, exessive test elements, too many test elements, misleading picture, bad design, glitchy water, no cubemaps, and all sorts of other stuff. unfitting props, random props and npcs, what is with the glados?, lame gameplay.

Thanks, the centrefort bit was originally meant to be some Combine structure I put in for a half life theme I was working on. I did try some extra buttons but I couldn't get the map to build in the hammer editor without removing a load of other objects or animations.

Having discovered how to get onto ground inside Castle and remove all 'bots, can I suggest a couple of cubes or button placements dpwn there to get spirals on and open centrefort.?

Just updated to version 11 of the map, now includes fog to try and reduce the draw distance and take the load off lower spec pc's. Added particle effects like water jets and I've added wind to make my fog fly through the castle.

For anybody interested in mapping in Valves Hammer, this map is running with brushes at 99.4% so 8146 brushes out of max of 8192, its got 62950 brushsides so thats 96.1% of max, for entdata (switches, triggers, props etc) its 92.6% full, the only other big percentage is on Physics where I'm at 62.9% of max. There are only something like 35 different texture types in use so that's not too bad. There's 243 direct lights and it says the maps size is 1301536 square feet [187421280.00 square inches.] To compile this map my quad core pc is really hammered, but when running it within Portal 2 I don't notice slow down :).

My map is maxed out, I did try a fog controller to try and reduce draw distance for lower spec pc's, the problem I found is it was hard to see where you were going with the fog and all the HDR light sources I've used. The entire outer stucture of the map is textured as NODRAW so it should help a bit for a lower pc. I think it's all the animated props I've used making it very complex.

I almost forgot to mention: this map causes lag on my computer (probably due to its size, as well as the lighting and water and perhaps other things).

I've noticed the rockets don't really do much damage (if any) to the player. In the original Portal, they would kill the player instantly.

Still working my way through this HUGE map.

Just updated to revision 10 of this map, I have added a turret king, Glados now has a few taunts, multi triggered sound tracks are throughtout the map now, added more animated castle destructions, prop decoration stairs, improved the easter egg; and reworked the original map puzzle for extra challenge.

Your first Storm the Castle map was one of my first ever played Portal 2 maps, so I was pretty excited when I saw reverse engineered. I like the challenge in fighting the Angry Hover Turrets =).

Thanks dhespelt I'll look into the Fat turret, could do with a King/Queen turret in my castle, there are various designs of turret in the editor but they don't all fire back.
Hi Cannons McChop , glad you're still playing this map, I keep changing it about. With the extra guns, they're a leftover from when the Hammer editor kept removing the portal gun when the player started, so I left them in just in case, might work them into extra gameplay elements.

I played this map since Update 5, and I'm confused what the extra portal guns do. I thought of asking when I got into the scary broken glass room with those Hover Turrets.

At the moment she's just an animated prop, I'm trying to get her to act like she does in portal 2, so I'm adding sound triggers so you'd get taunts. Ideally I'd like her to act or at least activate some castle defence system like a security camera would.

Updated to rev 7, trips rocket fire improved, more traps to catch out slow players, cube switch working on door again, tweeks to the environment, more kill triggers.

This map is still a work in progress, I've put the exit lift back in revision 6. I'm trying out new lighting to brighten areas up, gameplays different, water for the Castle moat has returned. If you get stuck in the lift just press esc.

Hey sorry about that it looks like after my revision 3 update I've managed to lose the exit door function, that's why you're stuck in the exit room. Didn't realise until now as I had so much stuff to play test in my map, the button appeared to work with the cubes, its the link to the exit lift that i've managed to delete. Next revision should fix it.

Just updated the map to version 5. Now includes spot lights and motion tracking cameras. Added birds like you'd get around a destroyed castle. Thanks to all players trying my map, hopefully the updates are getting downloaded if you still subscribe to this map. :)

Just added version 4 of this map, lots of changes, trying rocket trip wires, added lots of props into the level and chucked more portal guns into the map to help out as I'm trying harder to kill players now.

Updated this map to include Glados, I've altered things to try and fix the respawn issue. I've also added an easter egg for players that like to explore levels.

When I play tested this one, it would respawn on death on my pc. I had been verifying my Portal 2 game cache after the last update so perhaps that was fixing it for me. If any hammer pros know what I've done wrong, I'd appreciate any tips. Hopefully the hover turrets are working for players who didn't already have them installed??

Hi Spriteyeti, tried your game. Great Look! I don't know if it is the latest steam glitch or even my computer, but I tried it several times, when I die the game crashes instead of restarting from the saved point. Sorry to mention it as I was enjoying exploring the Castle.
