I checked the mod's code and it all looked fine in that respect. I then looked up the civ grey screen problem and it seems like the issue can be caused by problems with nVidia drivers as well as by having over 22 civs in a game while using mods. I found a lot of posts by people with a similar problem to you but I couldn't find any real solutions unfortunately. There IS a mod to fix the 22 civs problem but apparently it doesn't work for custom civs.
The leader screen for Squid Girl is set to import in the code but if the import value is set to 0 for your mod then Mathetes' solution should work for you. Otherwise I'm not sure I can help. Sorry about that man.
There is a workaround for the grey screen problem: Go to the Mod folder that by default is located at My Documents/My Games/Sid Meier's Civilization V and check the Squid Girl mod folder and open Squid Girl (v 1).modinfo. Then scroll down or search for XML/Leaders/Ika_Musume_Scene.xml and Art/Ika-chanDiplo.dds and if the import value is 0 (import="0") then fix that to 1 and save it.
