and besides they have very little health by default so you could probably kill them even with reduced damage from guns

It only affects damage to aliens and marines.

Does it affect damage from guns to barrels? Also, some missions may require long range weapons to deal with objectives, such as this grenade tossing part in Orion.

Chainsaw is classified as a weapon, not unarmed melee.

so what this does is makes melee do a lot of damage while guns do very little damage?
