The french fought back the best they could and towards the end of the Battle of France, they were starting to push the germans and italians back.
The government surrendered, in part to avoid Paris getting turned into a warzone. De Gaulle and his portion of the French Army retreated to England to continue the fight.

The french did attack the Germans Roryn81 but they surrendered in order to save people after a while

Also every colonial power lost their colonies after ww2, not just france, so that does not really mean much.

They were not defeated though, the government got cold feet and surrendered while the army wanted to fight on and was actually starting to turn the tide. Also remember that the invasion of france only worked at all due to sheer luck on the german side.

Before ww2, france had the most advanced and best designed tanks in the world. Their only realy weakness was the armament and that was due to outdated military doctrine, not technological or industrial deficiency, unlike the soviets, who suffered from both. Early soviet and german tanks were pretty ♥♥♥♥♥♥ too.

Im pretty sure in tank design, that probably goes to the Soviets or Germans, in terms of quality.

They were also drove out of Vietnam, and Africa. It has improved, but the history of conflict in France isn't spectacular.

In the early 20th century, France was a the leading country in tank design. They design the world's first modern tank, the evolutionary ancestor of every tank nowadays and generally did a lot of stuff.
