I would rank it up with spires of death in terms of difficulty, combined with vigil in terms of frustration.
There are no alternative ways to beat this quest. There is exactly one.
There are no fun strategies to use. Just cheesing and praying.
You build one guild. Krolm. You build as many as you can maintain.
Other than that, if you have the money, grab dwarves. Surround one village with Balistas. Now the next. So on. Whenever a town is overtaken, you spam rage of krolm until the horde is manageable again. Rince. Repeat. Pray.
So much luck involved. So many restarts. Such a slow, 10 day start. Bad quest, but doable, if you beat the entire game and thought it was too easy.
Took me 6 tries after I figured out the strat. Unfun. But winnable.
Rage of krolm spam? Again, impossible. Zombs will ignore heroes to beeline houses because FUCK YOU.
This quest is ass. Straight bad. Genuine dumbassery.
The idea that three in the vicinity of a house destroys it is bad enough, but managable if you kept the normal zombie ai. But no, you programmed them to beeline remaining houses because you hate babies and kick puppies.
And the designer marks it beginner. Beginner. Hilarious. The only beginner here is you designer man.
0/10, impossible.
Try to stay on top of it and kill zombs when they spawn? Fuck you, I just spawned 3 on a house immediately and that town is fucked now. Your heroes will run away from the horde.
Try to let one town die at a time to manage the horde? Congrats, ur fuckd. They will beeline the houses without ever fighting because they know they can just be near them and kill them via the power of intimidation.
I even spammed bastila towers everywhere. Like 4 times.
Try to surround a town? The zombies go right through the bastila towers ignoring them. And there are so many, even through three layers they will blitzkrieg.
Because they know they dont need hp. Just numbers and a genuinely braindead quest designer backing them.
Love the idea of the quest, but the execution is rather frustrating for the user unless they cheese and maybe get lucky.
Once the big guy came out, I just kept it petrified until it died.
I did not build a blacksmith or bazaar because I didn't want my heroes getting distracted buying potions and weapons. They're only zombies so it's not like they're tough to take down. Was a pretty fun and low stress game.
My strategy:
4 Market Places for the economy
1 Elves Guild to double the economy
1 Rangers Guild to explore
1 Temple of Dauros (for Paladins)
1 Temple of Agrela (in case I needed the res...ended up being unnecessary)
3-4 Warriors Guild
3-4 Temples to Helia
1 Hall of Champions
That was pretty much my strategy. I did lose 2 towns that created graveyards. I put a Wizard's Guild at each graveyard with 2 wizards in each guild to keep the constant spawn of zombies occupied. That was my fault for not monitoring it, I got lazy.
Also, Hall of Champions is very good here to put trophy on zombies to keep champions fighting. (had hall of champsions running almost entire time after money was coming in)
As soon as I had one of each guild, I started building a few ballistas. From then simply keep extorting and keep building ballistas, doesnt even need to be very thick. A constant stream of zombies will come, but your heroes will be able to fight them all back if you got all of them quick enough.
Zombies will not attack your buildings except maybe guard houses and ballista towers, they bee line to red buildings
---
Make sure to have level 3 wizards guild near the end, there might be a surprise!
---
I tried many different strategies but only one could I get to work. Tried about 10 different things!
Simply must turtle at one settlement. That is, at start I built a blacksmith and got it to level 3 as soon as possible at home castle, and then OUTPOST at one of the far corner settlements. Immediatly after finishing outpost, (while upgrading market and blacksmith), built three trading posts. From then, built 2 krypta, 2 fervus 1 wizard (i imagined, their skeletons and animals would distract zombies). From there, built 1 of each guild I could as money allowed. (Once having a rogues guild, extort was useful for all cash flow, as most caravans will not make it to the market once zombies are everywhere, nor tax collectors) One of the other things I built was a Magic Bizaar, as it seems to bring lots of money. Built it near edge of settlement to encourage combat
All guilds were built at the corner settlement surrounding outpost and the red inn and peasant houses
I had a crash a day or two after day 20 - but I could finish after loading the autosave.
Got no clues for the crash -but I had a couple of zombies walking around with 0 HP. Any bounty placed on them disappeared and heroes ignored them.
