The background scenery beyond the invisible walls are there to give the map a much nicer aesthetic than just an empty void of nothing. The background geometry is built in a small scale underneath the map and then upscaled visually to appear bigger.
They are in gmod by default, look in your entities tab. What they do is to control the sun position, skybox color / cloud texture, and fog color (which can be used to "fake" a night version of the map by setting fog to black and setting opacity to something like 0.95)
