I havent looked at the source, but in case your mod doesnt address this already: The game also wastes a lot of time resizing many mod preview icons to a specific resolution (426, 240). Interestingly just scanning mods that do not adhere to this standard and adjusting the files on-disk automatically to fit this criteria (I used TeximpNet previously for this) made no mod thumbnails almost obsolote by itself.
So maybe thats something you want to look into as well ;)
