Yes, it does work in battles with AI, but as noted in the description, I don't recommend it. From my own testing, defender AI doesn't seem to know how to deploy correctly (they stay bunched up). Attacker AI actually seems to work, BUT they often pop in and out of stealth before getting near you (Total War AI love to switch between walking and running).

You definitely should work for campaign. I hate hattori with the default mechanic.
