People often falsely call the TF2 art style "cartoony", when really it isn't: it's stylised . Valve devs said the TF2 artststyle was explicitely inspired by the illustrations of Leyendecker and Norman Rockwell and similar artists of Americana genre of the 1890s to 1940s.
It doesn't even work as reference to the German folktale or the statue because the Bronze statue in the city of Bremen depicts normal realistic animals. Not Howard the Duck. And I doubt a lot of people outside of north-western Germany know that folktale, especially not the younger generations.

I wouldn't say that. *Looking at iconic USSR dilogy adaption pf original fairy tale and multiple remakes, including 2024 live-action*
