This is because Land Rover Defenders, and other non-US spec vehicles, were not commercially available in the US, and importation of new automobiles were heavily restricted by a law that was implemented in the mid-1980s. This made it almost impossible to import a vehicle in the US unless you were incredibly wealthy or an automaker.
This law still stands today, and is commonly referred to as the '25 year rule' due to the law not applying to 'classic' cars 25 years or older. This means that you, right now, have more chance of driving a '89 Defender in IRL Kentucky, than a Zomboid survivor in 1993 Knox Country!
