One time, we headed out to this little pond behind the old gas station. Keith shows up with a cooler full’a beer but no bait. Not a single worm or cricket. He just looks at me and says, “Ellis, fish are curious critters. They’ll bite anything if you believe hard enough.” Then he ties a slice of bologna to his hook. Dead serious. Sure enough, I’m sittin there laughin when his line jerks and he pulls up a catfish big enough to swallow his hand. Instead of bein proud, Keith holds it like a trophy, but the dang thing thrashes, slaps him in the face, and knocks his hat into the pond. Keith dives in after it, forgettin the catfish is still hooked. Next thing I know, he’s splashin around yellin, “Ellis! This fish is draggin me under!” I’m just watchin from the bank. We didn’t catch nothin else that day, but Keith swore that catfish was “’bout to set a state record.” Truth is, it set the record for bein the first fish I ever saw beat up a grown man.
