The very idea is that the player is not supposed to be (at least initally) capable of having a wide enough arc nor far enough of illuminated surroundings to feel safe in the darkness.
But I am on the fence about it, gameplay considerations like these that are meant to increase 'difficulty' but really end up feeling like an onerous limitation despite it being quite intentional.
People are going to have tastes and preferences that don't follow that though and its fine, I am one of those players too.
