Galactic, none of those weapons other than rifles were common.

While these were used, Sharps were certainly not standard issue, especially for the most of the war. Leaders believed that it would run ammo dry too quickly. These firearms all have good accuracy to portray the rifling, too. On regards for lever guns, those were mostly used by cavalrymen, which again was really used for dismounted skirmishing or scouting. .... Your description describes the revolution not the civil war where Gatling guns, lever guns and revolvers were all in use and every gun was rifled and weapons like the single shot sharps were standard issue.

They can, I just have made only two missions. If you want to tailor your own maps, they are in the editor as CSA Private, Sergeant, etc. I would to see what you can make!

An explosion is kind of weird for the era, but I am adding a cannon soon. I have been noticing the same thing myself and I may add health boosts to allied soldiers, just enough so they are not dead on one hit. Thank you for your feedback @Pc_Cat!

I know it's beta and things changes, but I still wanna say: I test it only in official Powder & Steel map and I think custom squad really needs a explosion. Not matter be it door or wall. Just because of high aiming time enemy what stand behind door very easly kills first trooper who enters the room.

Blow a golf ball sized hole through the first man, he's dead on the spot. Draw my pistol on the second man, miss him entirely because it's smoothbore and nails the neighbors dog. I have to resort to the cannon mounted at the top of the stairs loaded with grape shot, "Tally ho lads" the grape shot shreds two men in the blast, the sound and extra shrapnel set off car alarms.
