Also problems with the Production Popup here, in combination with Haiti and one of many other mods... can't figure it out with the files in Incompatibility. Too bad, because I love the artwork, UU, UA and music.

I know this mod probably isn't being updated anymore, but Toussaint acts very strangely as an AI. Through a declaration of friendship, he denounced me. He didn't say "I've decided to tell the other leaders blah blah blah" as a normal 'hey ♥♥♥♥ you guy I just denounced you' message. He said, "We've been over this before and the answer is still no." as if I'd asked him to help me fight a war he wanted nothing to do with. Then I noticed...he'd denounced EVERY SINGLE KNOWN CIVILIZATION IN THE SAME TURN.

This bug is potentially a huge problem in singleplayer for anyone using the mod reasons that don't even need explaining; hopefully if this is a recurring problem that other players have had with the Haiti mod, you could address it if you ever patch this particular mod again. Might be an isolated incident, but I'm letting you know just in case

HOAX!

I was enjoying this very much but there is a major bug with Events & Decisions. At some point you get a message "Independence!", which is supposed to give you 4 missionaries. Instead of the 4 missionaries, I received 4 settlers. Hope you can fix this. I liked your concept.

The "DELETE IF INCOMPATIBLE" file inside "Incompatibility" folder is empty... this causes a crash with the in-game mod installer/extractor http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=432080

I want to confirm the last comment. Haiti is giving me the same issue: I cannot purchase anyhting in cities that have a dominant religion with Haiti active (I'm not playing as Haiti)

Hey, just an update from my last comment. I did some trial and error of different mod files and I can safely say that it is this Haitian civ mod that gives me some bugs. The major one is the capital, and sometimes other cities at random it seems, doesn't let me purchase *anything* with gold. It will just show "Settler 3 Turns" as the only option, as it appears on the production list. I tried uninstalling the mod and then reinstalling it, two times using workshop and civfanatics direct link, and the same result happened each time. The big problem is that this bug occurs to me for every civ I play if Haiti is active, even if Haiti isn't in the game at all.

Anyways, regardless of the bug, I love the concept of the Haiti civ and would love to play a non-bugged version. All your other mods are awesome and work fine. Keep up the work man =]

I'm not sure if it's this mod or another one in your series, but this might be the one that makes it impossible to purchase anything when active. Sometimes I can purchase random things in other cities, but never in the capital.

Re genocide: Dessalines did not intend to kill every white person, only the ones on Hispaniola. So the "intent of total annihilation" is debatable in that sense. Anyway, as you pointed out, there are non-genocides that killed more people, such as the Holodomor. While they may not be "genocides" per se, they are certainly examples of mass murder, or some new word should be created to describe them.

In any case, like you said, it's all a moot point, since Dessalines isn't even the leader, it's Toussaint.

@ruhrgebietheld Well, it seems we agree on the fundamentals, so this'll be my last comment on the topic. I'm just bothered by how, when I go to the Nazi Germany mod, in 12 pages of comments, I found one comment that could be construed as critical of including Hitler in the game. One. Most comments were positive to varying degrees, and the negative ones were in the vein of "Why did you make Hitler have the personality of an angry 10-year-old!? He wasn't like that!" (Make of that what you will.) So yeah, when more than one person raised such a furor over the inclusion of Haiti, and one contrasts that with the response to Nazi Germany, I'd say there's a bit of racism involved. Btw take note: I do not oppose the inclusion of Hitler at all. I downloaded the mod myself. I think we're mature enough to play as a nation and its leader in a video game without subscribing to its beliefs and policies. My concern is with the seeming double standard. (continued)

For the sake of accuracy, I think it would be better to put "Neg Mawon", for "Mawon" refers to brown, however Neg Mawon was the term used for said fugitive slaves.

Sorry everyone for the lack of responses. Haiti has some issues when downloaded through steam, and I might have to remove them from the workshop and try to put them again or something as I can't really figure out the problems.

@ruhrgebietheld: (on the bug reported) Hmn... I may have gotten something wrong when adding the missionary replacement lua code... Until I get a fix please try using whoward's DLL which adds the ability of using Custom Missionaries without extra shenanigans.

@francois: Can I see the path of where you're extracting the Haiti mod please? That might help.

I have made several attempts at downloading this civ and can not get it to even show up on my mods list in the game. Please help this civ is like at the top of my wish list of playable civs and I can't get it to work and yes I have BNW, so it should work.

@Blackwatch, once again, I don't disagree with you that there is no problem with putting Haiti into the game. However, I think that you are once again missing the point of those who do have an issue with it. I think they're wrong, but I see the logic behind their thinking, and it has absolutely nothing to do with racism.

Some scholars in the field of genocide studies hold that intent of annihilation is a requirement for something to be classed as a genocide. The general public as a whole adopts this view of genocide. In reality, very few campaigns actually qualify as genocide under this standard. None of the three examples you mentioned actually qualify under this reasoning, for a few reasons.

First off, despite your assertions, none of the three were totally wiped out. Their culture was, but the actual people were not. All three had survivors that were removed from their previous territory and intermarried with various ethnic groups, so mixed bloodlines of their heritage exist today. Second, the majority of those who were killed from those three tribes were not actively killed by Europeans. The huge majority of them died of disease (caused by Europeans, but in all but one or two cases outside of these three tribes such as the infamous smallpox blankets, this was done passively, not actively). Third, none of the three tribes you mentioned were targeted for active and intentional total annihilation. Their land was taken, their power was broken, but as mentioned previously, none of the three were killed down to the last person, and none of the three had that even attempted on them by the Europeans.

Under the aformentioned "intent of annihilation" standard, what happened in Haiti is actually one of the very few campaigns that qualifies as genocide. I disagree with this standard, but must admit that if we go by it, the Haitian ethnic cleansing is one of only a small handful of instances of genocide throughout the last 500 years or so. Other prominent ones that qualify under that standard are the Holocaust and the Armenian genocide. And unlike both of those, which were only partially successful, the Haitian campaign was carried out to completion.

I think people who use that standard are wrong, as I, like you, think that scale is a much more important factor than intent of total annihalition. It's why I believe that what Stalin did was even worse than what Hitler did (plus the fact that he did it during "peacetime" and under the cloak of deception). However, I do understand the thinking of the people here who are using that standard to object to the inclusion of Haiti.

In the end, I think it's a moot point anyways, because the leader is Toussaint, not Dessalines. Plus, there are other mods out there of civs who qualify under the same standard of genocide (there's a Nazi Germany mod, for example). I don't think that the mods are glorifying what they did, but rather just including another part of history. Those who are especially sensitive to that can just refrain from downloading those mods.

I'm having some trouble with Haiti, enemy cities aren't becoming occupied when I convert them, and I'm not getting any golden age points from them.

You say it's all about the difference in intent. I don't know if intent even matters compared to the sheer number of victims, but in any case, it's a moot point. It's just not true that white-perpetrated genocides were intended only to remove resistance while sparing the majority of the population. Many Native American tribes were completely wiped out by whites, to the last man, woman, and child. The only reason people don't see this as a total genocide is a semantic trick where people see Native Americans as just one group of people. For example, the Taino, the Calusa, the Pequot, all completely erased. Those were total genocides whose numbers of victims most likely exceed the whites killed in Haiti.

@Leugi I've encountered a weird issue while playing as them. When I go to purchase the Houngan with faith, the purchase screen shows the Houngan, but when I click on it I am instead given a normal missionary. There was no way for me to get a Houngan.

@Blackwatch, I don't have any issue with the inclusion of Haiti, but I think you're missing the point of those who do. They are incorrect in blaming the genocide on Toussaint, as it was actually perpetrated by Dessalines. However, they are correct in saying that it was an especially abhorrent genocide. It wasn't a genocide in the sense of most of the white-perpetrated genocides of the time (which removed resistances and rivals, but spared the majority of the populations). It was a full-blown complete ethnic cleansing. Dessalines wanted to make sure that every single white Haitian was killed. His goal was total annihalition of them. That's a very rare type of genocide. The Holocaust is the example usually used for that type of genocide. For some reason, the public is much more sensitive to that type of genocide, as opposed to the more common type perpetrated by Stalin and the white-perpetrated genocides of the era to which you referred.

@Leugi-So I figured out how to take the RAR file and turn it into a zip file. I did that, extracted the files and still nothing. So I re subcribed to the Haiti App via steam and still nothing. Whats funny is I have your Cuba, Bolivia and Aymara Civs and they work just fine. Haiti doesn't want to work for me. Any suggestions Mr. Leugi?

My God, these people. Given that Stalin got in the game despite killing 10 million people, to have so much concern over the deaths of 5000 seems oddly misplaced. It's because the victims were white and the perpetrators were black, isn't it?

By the way, if you're referring to the 1804 massacre, that happened AFTER Toussaint was killed. And when you compare 3000-5000 dead with some of the genocides that whites were perpetrating around the world at the time...it doesn't compare.

Cuba, Haiti, Bolivia and the Aymara are cursed, and for some reason they crash the game when downloaded from steam (not for everyone btw, some people are unaffected, but there's no way of knowing)

Hi I subcribed and I am having tech issues. The civ shows up in the MODS file on the computer. Its listed as an CIV5MOD file. When the game is launched it is not listed in the MODS. I do not see the civ so I can turn it on. Can you please help me?

Yeah, I'm kind of uncomfortable with leaders who comitted genocide being used as civ leaders,... I know they almost all have stains on their record (initiating purges, causing famine, religious warfare, exiling, carpet bombing etc) ,... but genocide is a little beyond the pale.

I wonder if they wage genocides on their own population like they did after the real revolution.
