The buttons are nice and all, but kinda useless by themselves ( obviously)

This mod doesn't implement multiplayer, it just enables the multiplayer button currently hidden from the main menu. It is not that useful, but does let you see how far along each release is based on at what point the connection fails.

If you really do want multiplayer, there is a mod on Nexus, B42 Multiplayer by Death Legion. It is a bunch of janky patches on top of the existing multiplayer code, but it does sort-of work.

Latest Supported Version: 42.8.0, does not work because it only supports this version, when you try to run it says an error no matter what you do.

Did anyone ever figure out how to get a working multiplayer build going?

I understand that this mod only ads the buttons, I am wondering if anyone made like a mod to add onto this pre-existing mod.

And if so, can it be used to host servers privately, and will it work with other mods?

Og Buga, this workshop addon adds only multiplayer buttons and doesnt add the multiplayer support itself, check out the discord server, there is a build that works
