Latest patch broke a lot of mods in general. It could be both because of this mod and because of the patch.
Hans-Landa 3
Saucepan for some reason isn't working for me and I don't know if its because of this mod or because the latest patch just broke the functionality on the saucepan
From my testing the latest patch 42.2, only cooking copper, gold, metal and silver cups as well as microwaving the clay mug is needed from this mod.
Rachel L 1
Kettles and saucepans have been fixed too.
Miss Pauling  [
I haven't thoroughly read through the update notes yet, but here's everything I've seen regarding boiling water by skimming the text:

- Empty beer, pop, and tin cans can be used to boil water.
- Boiling water now 10x faster.

So I guess you do need the mod for the rest of the items that this mod adds. Correct me if I am wrong, I didn't have the time to test or read through the patchnotes yet.
Ulas 1
same question over here.
Major_Mooseman 1 月 24 日 下午 10:57
Is this still needed after 42.1.0 and 42.1.1?
Miss Pauling  [
One idea would be, to make using the same bottle for cooking, over and over, less effective at detoxication, seeing as there are several stages of toxicity already in the game. E.g. if you use the same plastic bottles about 5 times to cook water you can't entirely purify it, you can only reduce the toxicity factor to "mild", encouraging the player to only cook water in plastic bottles in an emergency.

Alright you've made a point. PET bottles are quite heat resistent and they won't break as long as there is water inside to keep the temperature of the plastic below the melting point, however there absolutely is a health risk to it, it's even mentioned in the video you sent: "it is not something I would do all the time, because I would be concerned about chemicals leaching out of the water here, but it is definitely possible[...] in an emergency situation.[...] make sure the flames are not physically on the bottle"

https://www.srlongroup.com/everything-you-need-to-know-about-putting-boiling-water-in-a-plastic-bottle/#:~:text=The%20biggest%20concern%20when%20adding,are%20released%20into%20the%20water .

So I don't know what the best gameplay implementation would be all facts considered, for now I'll either just make them cookable or add a sandbox option until I work this out in detail.

There is no risk of breaking a water bottle or contaminating the water. As long as there is water inside. Its a common survivl technique.

The PET bottle has been used since 1973, but water bottles were first used in 1622

3. Not all plastic is safe for cooking. The water might cool the plastic down to keep it below it's melting point unless fo course the plastic comes in direct contact with flames, but unless you use somewhat specialised cooking bags, the plastic can release carcinogens into the air and water.

Conclusion:
I don't wanna study chemnistry over this. I could try (!) and make it so you can cook water in plastic bottles inside ovens but only at a 100-150°C, otherwise the bottle will break or contaminate the water. But here might be the better idea, I could add a sandbox option for an arcade mode that ignores some of the health risks and lets you cook water in plastic bottles in any case.
Miss Pauling  [
I partially agree.

1. There's different kinds of polymeres with varying heat resistance. Additionally the video you linked was posted in 2012, Project Zomboid is set in 1993. I ain't no chemnistry expert or studied the evolution of plastic over this 19 year time span, but I'd take a wild guess here and say 1993 plastic might've been a bit different than 2012. Feel free to prove me wrong here.

2. In the video, other than occasional tiny flames, there wasn't really a fire, it was embers. That's absolutely not the same than putting it over a burning fire which 95% of the time, is the state of fireplaces in Project Zomboid. Though sure I could (probably) make it so you can safely cook water in plastic over embers. 1/2

hate to prove ya wrong here about boiling water in anything plastic but... it can even
be boiled in plastic bags IRL https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xV2gsWHhDhY
Rachel L 1
Yes Leslie, you can put a Plastic bottle with water on a fireplace
Miss Pauling  [
Would you put plastic bottles into a fireplace irl? I dont think so, they do work in mircowaves in vanilla. Glass bottles can theoretically be used to cook water using fire, but it's absolutely not recommended since the glass can explode because of temperature changes. As for buckets, if it heats up (turns red) it is cleaning water, you can see the progress in debug mode. I've tested it and it took about 13-14 hours, I didnt measure exactly though. Not sure why the game increases the cooking time so exponentially, more water volume does take longer to cook irl, but 10L definitely dont take THAT long to cook. Not sure what function determines cooking time in the game, but it increases way too quickly with volume.
Redeye 1
waterBottle.Base and BaseWineopened never heats up.
Redeye 1
@Lesley Gore - I'm aware. I'll test it again and confirm. Thank you. Steps taken that I remember:

1. load 1 log into fireplace.
2. Light fire
3. place all containers in with water tainted.
4. fast forward until one of them changes.

I've observed that even half a day, the bucket never changes to clean. Neither does the glass bottles or plastic bottles with water. I can do Kettle, Soup, tin can, and copper kettle.

I will let you know if I see anything different, keeping in mind your warning.
Miss Pauling  [
@Redeye

1. PLEASE BE AWARE that there is a bug where water containers won't cook/heat up, if you turn the fire/oven on with the water containers already inside the fire. Please make sure you are not just encountering this bug before making a request/reporting an issue.

2. Buckets do work (unless you are encountering previously mentioned bug), purification of a full bucket just takes a VERY long time. The metal bucket is even cookable in vanilla and istg, if I had a nickel for every time someone requested buckets I'd have at least 10 nickels.
Redeye 1
buckets don't seem to work either.
Redeye 1
doesn't work in fireplaces in houses.
Moldi 1
Should mention the cooking pot/bbq thing is a regular issue im having, not the mod. I'm just installing it now.
Moldi 1
You're a legend. I just researched for over 30 mins wondering why my stupid saucepan wouldnt work. Something else I noticed too, when I put my cooking pot (lucky I had one) in my bbq before I turned it on, it didn't boil. Seemed to work after I started it and than placed the pot in. Not sure if it's just me or that's a common issue.
Are these new issues? Or a B42 problem? Just seems like something that should have been patched a while ago.
Rachel L 1
There is. The metal one wont fint in the microwave
Miss Pauling  [
@Zaza is there metal jerry cans? I always thought there was only 1 kind of jerry can and that one's plastic. I could make it mircowaveable if it even fits in a microwave.
Zaza 1
heya, any chance you can add 'Jerry Cans' to the list of cookable items? Being able to do a lot of water in a big metal jerry can on a camping fire or in an oven could really help, its the same capacity as a dispenser bottle
Rachel L 1
There is a mod that add that already i think
Nimrod 1
It does not seem to work at all for me , The mod is probably in a conflict with an other mod .
I will report it if I find the incompatibility .
Miss Pauling  [
@Tiny Muffy no but that's a great idea to implement thanks. I'll see if I can figure out how to add that.
Tiny Muffy 1
Legend, can I steralise bandages in these too?
@Lesley Gore Theeere it is, a mixture of the game itself letting me use a B42 only mod in B41 and my own sporadic incapacity to understand what I'm reading despite it not being that hard to understand. Cheers on the good work. I'll keep this for when I DO go into B42 (Because not being able to boil water inside of a tin can or a SAUCEPAN would send me into an existential crisis)
Ealon 1
Sorry, @Lesley Gore It was the bug @Saphkey pointed out, not your mod. Thanks for maintaining this mod!
Miss Pauling  [
It was made for B42. The file structure of the mod shouldn't allow it to work in B41.
Yeah no I think I the game itself didn't notice this was for B42 and it was just me making the mistake lol. I'll go to B42 later to see if it works fine there.
Regardless, I'll make a separate save and give myself a hammer to see if it's fine now.
Unless this does work on 41 still and I'm just misinterpreting the title (no fault of your own, I'm just dense sometimes)
Oh my god nevermind, I'm just an idiot. I have it enabled in build 41 and this is for 42, I'm so sorry.
hmm i just enabled this mod and i have no issues with any hammers or missing icons, mod works perfectly! and thanks for making this. Happy new year too btw !
Miss Pauling  [
@MamaPapaBearPR huh literally how, I just changed my mod to not have any code of stuff that isnt relevant. Again I dont know how this happens my mod doesnt touch the code of hammers. not sure if thats a game issue since another commenter said that the game considered metal sheets as part of my mod, so I changed the mod structure to not mess with other items at all.
Bit of an issue, hammers seem to be considered as originating from your mod, overwriting the vanilla hammers. They have no icon and crash the game if I try to equip it.
@Ealon there is a bug in the base game b42 where water-containers won't cook/heat up if you turn the fire/oven with the water-containers already inside the fire.

This is at least the case when trying to purify water.
The solution is to start the fire/grill and then put the water-container in afterward.
Just for gods sake do not put metal in the microwave :D
Miss Pauling  [
does the water heat up (aka the item gets red in the propane grill) at all or does it not even heat up?
Ealon 2024
I came across a bug. When this mod is enabled, I cannot purify water in a pot using a propane grill. Disabling this mod allowed it to work.
Johnny Silverhand 2024
does it work with campfires or just ovens
What about buckets
@erub1n no you can, i did it yesterday. it just takes a while
