Not judging or anything but I like to financially support indie devs, and especially for a game that I really enjoyed.
Direct download is mostly because that it's no big deal to throw the code up on Github, especially since I have to manually build releases anyway.

It takes long enough to die and respawn an extra 40 times when I was doing it legitimately to test that it worked (and that save reached just above the Depths with about 20 deaths)
In the Remix menu for the mod, you can set a ghost cap, preventing it from making more ghosts than that limit, should you die more than that. There's other little settings there as well.
Alternatively, you can force it to use that cap number as if it were the death number. That's how I made the thumbnail, spawned 1000 of these scugs at once to get something reasonably dense. My computer definitely did not like that.
