Yes they were definitely sunk - however I am using some other mods, they might have interferred. No worries, mission was still enjoyable.

In my playthrough it worked when I sank hostile warships

Just tested, sinking the 3 warships should trigger the victory condition. Maybe one of them wasn't completely destroyed (still red)? Otherwise maybe a bug in the game itself.
There is a red submarine sometimes, but that isn't part of any trigger, you don't need to sink that.
So if you have destroyed all 3 incoming warships you can see the mission as completed

Hm, sinking the warships should end the mission, I will take a look

I enjoyed the mission so far though it did not end - I sank the "spy" ship and three warships, what are the ending conditions?

Why is it 4.6gb for a scenerio, they are usually kb or mb large.
