We tried making the gem paintable, however due to how materials work in TF2, we weren't able to make it not look like plastic (huge white highlights), compared to how it is currently, unpaintable but with nice tinted shine.

yep absolutely get what you are saying there, personally even with the currect paint region, i wouldn't be opposed to getting this in the game since it's a reallt nice execution of a wizard engi concept while still keeping it in line with the game. But i feel like making the gem paintable would not just be better for loadout combinations, but would be overall just better in terms of the size of the paint region since its not just less obstructive, but it would also look really nice to color the gem something like green, purple, or orange!

Undercoat being paintable felt more versatile for loadout options; we did make the paints less saturated, but there's really so much we can do to make Lime Green & Neon Pink more palatable.

The undercoat's in a spot that's really not that of an offensive area, where you're only ever going to be seeing it from the front. Even then, Engie's hands are always going to be in front of him holding onto his weapons, and there's also him hauling around his toolbox when placing his buildings.

Making the paint region the gem would be really cool.

along with that, i feel like the *current* oversized undercoat paint region really doesn't add any flair to the cosmetic, especially compared to painting the gem, and doesn't look good, especially with oversaturated paints like lime and pinm

(by painting it mann co orange, lime, etc.)

the paint region would be way too big and distracting otherwise and it would look way cooler to have like an emerald, amber, or different colored gem instead

make the gem paintable instead of the whole undercoat, then its a good Cosmetic
