very cool mod and an especially interesting idea
im not sure if i did something wrong though but my dwarves aren't moving any of the new written materials to any of my libraries or codices stockpiles
im having a similar problem with the obelisks from your altars expanded mod, wherein they aren't moved anywhere and i dont know what category of construct they're supposed to be under
Azimuth 7
Nevermind, I figured it out
Azimuth 7
Or just change what races make what writing systems? Like allow dwarves to make bone writings for example
Azimuth 7
Is there any way I can modify the mods files to allow custom races to make clay tablets and other writing systems?
@Azimuth this mod does not add any writing systems to kobolds. And do not impact any other mods created civilizations/races.
Azimuth 7
I'm using a kobold race mod and playing as them. Is that why maybe i'm not getting the option to make clay tablets at the craftsdwarf shop?
Azimuth 7
Does this mod work in the latest update?
Thank you. BTW, would love to know how you make these thumbnails. Really dig the art style...
Yes, the vanilla resources have not been removed for anyone.
Do the civilizations still use the vanilla systems? For example, do humans still use books and scrolls, both through world generation and in fort mode, alongside the wax tablets? Sorry if this is otherwise obvious, I am really new to DF.

@Tumadreconvinagre
Thanks :-)

This is actually really original! Thank you for your creative work!
@kwheeler it just adds do not remove anything. Scroll and codex are still available
niemst, does this mod still allow dwarves to write books in addition to using the clay tablets? Or does it basically replace books with clay tablets?
@Assassin36789 - sure :-). You almost need to do nothing. Just produce clay tablets (craftworkshop -> make writings -> make clay tablet) or mudozosto (craftworkshop -> make writings -> cut mudozosto (bone book)) the produced items will be handled by the game same as scrolls. The dwarfs will use them in the library (zones -> meeting area -> library) https://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Library - it is helpful to place the workshop producing them or stockpile (with tools) in the library.
What more you can 'force' copy existing text into the empty tablet with: 'carve writings to tablet', 'inscribe with metal runes and fire tablet' or similar 'cut writings on mudozosto (bone book)'
Regardless above - some visitors will bring those with them into your fort (please see limitations and the screenshots)
I hope it was the push u needed. Enjoy the game :-)
I love the mod so far but I don't have any idea on how to use clay tablets or the bone carving. Can you please provide me a push in the right direction?
@Darmak thx, it is realy nice to hear that :-)
Darmak 2024
Dang, THIS is the kind of mod I absolutely adore! Just flavorful little additions full of cool ideas and details. Thank you for taking the time to create this, I'll definitely be giving your other mods a look!
@Cat, sure I will add that to my todo list
Business Cat 2024
This a fun mod, I always liked the writing system in DF. Any chance you might consider doing a more extensive mod that revamps the library system itself a bit? After seeing your nobility and clergy mods, the first thing that entered my mind was 'what if the library system had more roles in it/was a bit less bare bones'. Regardless, keep up the good work!
What does requires written on tool mean for tablets ts
@CocoBat thanks :-)
I really enjoy your mods, they add a lot to the flavor of the worlds
@nlemst The art does suit them as unclear cat-lizards, same with gobbos. It's that distinct [utterances] tag that gives the protolanguage flair that conflicts, at least for adventurer mode. And would be a larger protolanguage project to recreate without the tag. I'll keep Osthustmukca in mind as a dependency, since it's still in your files for subterranean animal people. Once again I appreciate the mod
@Experiments

For clarity - the system of writing was the thing inspired in real word. There is no reason to assume there is any connection with entity in game and civilization that brought inspiration. Otherwise the goblins related writing would be also by default offensive. I don't see benefit of implying connections instead of noticing that pointing to inspiration is a way to give credit and point to uniqueness or ingenuity of some civilizations / cultures.

But about >Kobolds shouldn't write< you are right. In the today update I removed ability to create that tool by them.
Great concept, I love it. Though I'm not totally okay with otherwise non-verbal Kobolds using such an elegant and culturally significant system, so I guess I'll have to find a marginally smarter kobolds mod. They're closer to very early hominids than Incans, and presented as animals and not people. The historical analogues are kinda... yeah. Consider linking a kobold mod you like in the mod page~
