It gives them alternate textures and I've been doing a whole playthrough with this mod on 1.5. It bugged out when using 1.6, which is why they all had the red boxes as heads I think.
the most likely cause is a mod conflict or your mod version is out of date due to issues with the steam workshop.

trust me, there's SO much you can do to make them work. I've done extreme desert avali runs. You can do it without cheating and making them survive room temp conditions. Think outside the box, and think rationally.
The Avali Isolationists have zero problem raiding your 120f Desert Base.
As I know I can't please everyone, there does exsist alternative sprites for those interested, made by Rekku here - https://psteamcommunity.yuanyoumao.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3044430793 . There's alot more technical stuff under the hood that allows for tri-coloring from what I know, and considering Rekku is a good friend, I'd be dammned if I didn't throw them a bone.
Also, a TMYK - Plural of Avali is Avali. Avalis, Avaloi, Avalies and Avalie are all improper plurals- much like plural of moose is moose, and plural of geese is geese, plural of Avali is Avali.

you absolutely can. Think outside the box.
Xenotypes are a far better system to HAR in terms of just being compatible / working with, so I've kept this alive for that sake.

Avali will not count as xenos for ideoligions explicitly due to the fact that it world require me to learn HAR 2.0, something I have no interest in learning. If someone makes a patch, and sends it to me, I will integrate it with the mod (with proper crediting) On the other side, however, I am working on a potential update to turn the avali raider faction from Pirates to a rough-outlander equivalent.
