they're similar on the surface level but what sets the difference between the two is how they look and appeal:
one is more animal-like, often close to the design philosophy of cartoons with exaggerated animalistic features and such, which many may find repulsive, which is understandable;
the other is more close to the design philosophy of anime, with more human-like features, which is more visually appealing but some will still find it repulsive due to said reasons.
