At the end of the day, I've learned a lot more about handling QC commands and loading up and working with Blender, something I've had difficulty just understanding, and I feel accomplished that this even functions in the first place.
Either way, Thanks for the insightful information, and have a wonderful rest of your day!
Hello, and yeah, you're pretty much right. But I'm gonna be real, I did all this on a manic whim. Most of the ammo models present in game are already as cheap as one can get for models, and therefore did not have LOD patched in for them. Things such as arrows and their boxes do however have such LOD patched in.
You are far more practised and knowledgeable about modelling and such systems, I will concede to that. My methods are rudimentary, and more of a proof of concept for other modders more than anything.
As for areaportals, I do know about such handy functionality as I have had interest in using Hammer before, but... I'd also be relying on mappers doing a good job at optimising their custom maps, and to their credit, some do well. Others however, could do a better job at it, if they wanted to put more polish on their final product.
areaportals should handle this situation for worldmodels, not even valve thought it was a good idea adding level of detail to worldmodels in l4d1/l4d2
TLDR: redudant, areaportals are a thing
