As for the inventory clutter note, I'm personally happy with trash in games - as long as it serves a purpose, as intangible that purpose might be. Reduce, reuse, recycle, reappropriate. Zomboid is great for that kind of thing, but I know a lot of people don't find that so great. So I figure, being a food item, the MRE would fall more in line with the game's treatment of most food waste and simply... disappear. This is "Vanilla MRE," after all, not an expansion into the wide realm of cookery like Sapph's!
As for cluttering the inventory, if anything I enjoy getting to unpack everything and use it realistically, have you tried the version in Sapph's cooking mod? You unpack and get crackers, condiments, you can heat the main up separately with the FRH, I really liked it that way. Made meal time a fun thing. Sometimes you even got those coffee packs, which made it useful to carry a mug around with you. You can pretend you're Steve1989 :D
On the idea of the MRE item giving multiple components, you run into the problem of cluttering the inventory - a problem of the MRE in reality, excessive packaging for the sake of preservation. I thought it might be cool to have the pack also give Alcohol Wipes, but as far as I know, MREs at the time only had non-alcoholic Wet-Naps. Oh well!
