The hat definitely looks a little smooth and almost plastic for a hat, but comparing it with the rest of the soldier's outfit it doesn't look bad at all.

Its an okay cosmetic in my opinion. not the best, but not the worst either.

If the hat was to be paintable, i would paint it black
If the beard was to be paintable, i would paint it any natural hair color.

The hat looks... stiff. Or plastic-y. I don't know how to describe it beyond that.
Either way it looks weird.
With that being said, it's not bad.

add a style that removes the beard and it would be perfect.

The hat you got down perfectly! The beard however does still need some work as it looks very flat and low quality. Give it some more texture and details, and you got yourself a really good one!
