Vanilla now has a gene, Webbed Phalanges, that seems to do exactly the thing that you wanted for Aquatic. If you can convince Taranchuk to take a look at it and tell us if it works, that's be hella nice. I tried to look at it myself but pathfinding is just one of those systems that's hard to get for novice to wrap her head around.

@Goji, with greatest respect, but have you, Arquebus, or Taranchuk look at my (as Flia) two pull requests on Github?
- One concerns a relatively minor compatibility thing for Vanilla Expanded Psycasts (VPE wants an icon for water focus and I reused an Ideoligion icon for that)
- Other concerns how BackstoriesDef.xml is *still missing* from 1.6 Def folder. (Plus a couple of hopefully unoffensive description edits)

As for pathing problem: 1.6 has a native solution of some kind that I didn't get around to properly testing yet. Genes now have a "waterCellCost" value that seems to influence both the actual pathing cost but also how pawn prioritizes tiles. In my own branch I implemented it as a test, and it *seems* to work just how one would imagine mermaids to work, but like I said I didn't test it thoroughly yet.

Apologies for the wait. This mod has been updated to version 1.6 with quite a few balance changes. I strongly advise you to read the change notes. The core abilities and genes remain recognisable, but a few genes and abilities have been refined (or at least I hope so) for fairness and thematic accuracy. You can leave me A suggestion if you feel the change is too much.

One thing to keep in mind: since the pathfinding framework is not being updated, aquatic pathfinding has become janky again. Pawns will not prioritise work on wet tiles even if they are faster. Painful, I know.

I have also added a number of background stories that suit both aquatic and normal pawns (for example, coastal rescuer). They should be unique enough for aquatic races but won’t seem out of place in the normal background story pool.

I put the Dubs patch back, but that's about the extent of what I can do. I don't play with the mod so I can't really test if it still works. I also can only barely even read C# so in case it causes any issues now I won't be able to fix it. Tell me if it works, willya?

I also hopefully fixed the pathfinding thing, I think. That patch I pushed yesterday, actually, I just didn't say it here.

@royallyTipsy Would you mind re-enabling the dubs patch on your repo? enabling the setting currently does nothing because the harmony patch is commented out...

You can also try my personal repo https://github.com/Flia/StagzMerfolk , but outside of very minute typos the only issues I managed to find and fix are Backstories file and a psyfocus icon for VPE. (I made pull requests for all of that so hopefully eventually it will be in the main mod.) I'm trying to figure out how to make mermaids use native 1.6 code for water pathfinding, but so far had little luck. Also, fair warning that I'm an absolute code monkey so it's probably a good idea to download master as a zip instead of cloning it, which to be fair is what most people will do anyway.

Actually, in that git, the backstories are just missing in 1.6 folder. I am getting an inkling why (blindly copying BackstoriesDef.xml from 1.5 gives errors) but yeah that's minus a feature.

To everyone in this thread: github version of the mod has been updated to 1.6 for months now. I'm by no means a good modder, but to my amateurish examination it appears to be fairly basic touch up so that the mod simply wouldn't throw errors in the current version of the game. In case you are absolutely craving some merfolk it may be worthwhile to try it? There's however no integration with the pathfinding changes, so merren will continue to path through land instead of water where they are faster.

@polios, I watch their github on occasion, and there was some movement there about a month ago. It's possible that the bare minimum the mod needs to work on 1.6 is already done, and the reason why it's not been updated here is because there's more progress going on in someone's private project. Though, I dare not to assume too much.

One could attempt playing with the latest github version to see if it works, perhaps, but personally I have not tried yet. My latest walkthrough roleplay could not accommodate Merren anyway, so I was willing to wait for the official update here.

good to know this is getting updated. had essentially replaced this mod with the Nixie mod for my first 1.6 colony, and while its a similar ive really been missing the join events and Merren abilities. can't wait for the update 👍

And here I was, urgently learning Rimworld modding in hopes of updating this mod myself. It is a huge relief to know that the original people and actual pros will update it. I will be watching your github repo with great interest <.< (If you notice a public fork that's probably mine lol.)

This mod is not abandoned and will be updated. Please be patient. I work in healthcare and had an extremely busy past month. Plus the coders I’ve been collaborating with are currently swamped with updates for old mods. I have to get in queue. Thank you
