Why wouldn't there be lasing medium in space? The lasing medium is in the lamp. And wouldn't it be far more effective without the atmospheric absorption in the way?

Anyway, TI whole ship weapons output are in the realm of only hundred-something megawatts while drive, powerplants, radiators run in tens of terawatts. Weapons just scale far too behind the powerplants and reactor.

The worry I have is that lasers are already better than reality. Without a lasing medium in space I think the effective range should be slightly lower.
For game play though I totally agree with you.
