The titan wasn't made for work and the crew instead of insane is just clueless what a real submarine was like.
There is such a thing as crushing depth, even the largest, most powerful nuclear submarines can only dive so far down before even they too get crushed and implode. A small sub like the titan sub likely went way past that limit and simply could not hold back all that weight and pressure. Now if it were made of Tungsten or Chromium, it probably would have survived such a plunge...just barely. Titanium just does not have the capacity to withstand about 50-100+ atmospheres of pressure.
