The connector on top is actually to allow docking on the bottom of a ship that is part of the ARDN series. A hangar door opens and you simply look down and jump into the seat via the opening on the top of the fighter. In a hangar, a ceiling mounted connector with a walkway is what I had in mind where you could walk across and simply access it quickly. I have already begun construction on a carrier that uses this to full effect.
You can also dock the fighter on the side of a ship that again, offers access via a door so that you can simply access the fighter and immediately jump into the fray. I wanted to break away from the traditional bottom mounted connector for a fighter and this was the design I came up with. It has served ARDN well so far.
