If your empire has a population of 1000 citizens every time you build it you will have 50 points of unhappiness for each city that built it, if the cities are 100 you get 5000 of unhappiness.

ADVICE! Purchase sslaves in captured cities and then raze them. Siege Capitals to reduce population and then do not allow them to grow. For religion go mass happiness and spread! Good Luck! I made it to 150 AD before unhappiness set in. Danube area is a nuisance!!! Only capture city states if you need a staging area, eg. Asia Minor. Use Religion!! Mod is awesome, but so unbalance in late game.
It is just a perfect change that the game really needed. ranged units makes this game boring.
