this might be easier after the update, but what about animating the freight containers with an opening and closing animation?

Not sure that would be possible, unless you somehow were able to make it also a self-sorting block. That hurts my head.

could you make a version where only the materials shown on the shelf can be put in them to add to the imersion?

I think that build states refering to the content within is better than putting whatever you want inside and making it look like it holds different items than the content within it

how feasible is animated at least small cargo containers, with the sliders opening up on the side that is accessed, showing some shelves or some sort of interior bits. or would that be too much?

I'd love to see all of these animations in the base game... with maybe a check-box for turning them on and off for people with potatoes.

Great idea, now if it was made for small block there could be a conveyer port at the bottom, (container usage) and activation to move to character from shelf, then with more connected in a small block storrage room they would all look in diferent filled stages, also depending on materials stored.
(could be an idea for further development ;)
For large block, could make it centered on a floor design where it had conveyer port on bottom.
