TF2's characters are all designed to be immediately recognisable from a distance due to their overall designs, which includes their proportions and height which gives them all a unique silhouette. On top of that, all classes have animations that're unique to them and only them, which includes walk/run cycles and also how they carry weapons.
Engineer wearing a gasmask isn't going to suddenly negate all of that and confuse players; if the only way you can tell what a class is is just by their head and being right up in their face, rather than observing from a distance before advancing, then that's a you problem.
