TrueWhiteKnight, thinking about it...
I recently found a years-old thread via Google (some reddit-ish forum site) where a player described using the voxel hand sphere tool to clean up the terrain mess. Select the tool, press K, in voxel tool options deselect snap to grid and select project to terrain (or voxel? I forget exactly). Increase voxel tool size to anything larger than 20.
Then ctrl + right-click the voxel hand tool on any craters or lumps, to reset the ground to brand new smooth voxel state. Due to how the voxel grid/map is laid out, sometimes need to click around near a deformation to get it to register and fix.
This was an awesome, obscure tip.
If you want to fix the messed up terrain, you can always try using the Terrain Tool by Junrall:

Crew Enabled already supports alternate characters. Have a look at the guide.

It doesn't look like I'll be able to turn off voxel damage from meteors. Looks like the only way is to use the game setting. Conversely, the cumulative meteor damage to the ground is probably much less than the mining damage done by a single player.
@RPI
I think getting loot from spiders is cheesy, but this is something you can customize in your own game (I'm pretty sure) using AI Enabled, so everyone can play the way they like. I missed that you were referring to worlds without resources. Yeah, that's probably a good idea. :)
@CaptainShack
Thanks! Love your work!

Unfortunately, I don't think I can stop the resource spawn.
The meteors no longer give resources. Just spiders.
