I propose a solution, but I have no idea how practical it is: For each mech that has classic and new visual design, designate a lore year that implements the change. So then new variants that appear after that year are by the current design, and variants older than that year are the classic design.
Is that a bug?

If so, then I've encountered the Men Shen too early, in around 3021-3022. It is listed as being introduced around 2700 or something like that.... when I think it mentioned it was an omnimech.
