Trying to control an elite, or any other character can be difficult, but it wouldn't stop someone like me from playing it. There is a campaign mod in workshop that lets us play as elite, a couple that I know of anyways. One of the two lets you play as all kinds of characters if I remember it's description right.

its not quite as simple. elites aren't meant to be controlled by players, they have weird melee junk, movement junk, and can't throw grenades. they don't handle well at all

I seem to remember being able to change the cyborg biped's references to have all the qualities of an elite biped or any other, it was a while ago though, maybe it doesn't work with MCC. I would think it does though. I've used the same technique to turn b40's scorpion tank into a wraith in every possible way, by swapping the vehicle's references with that of a wraith, because I couldn't place new things on a map yet back then. Just learned how to do that now. Anyway, I did the same thing I did to the scorpion to turn it into a wraith but setting the cyborg's references as the elite tags instead. Should work.
