Not 100% sure, the workshop system isn't explained well lol
[EARLIEST_COMPATIBLE_NUMERIC_VERSION:1]
[EARLIEST_COMPATIBLE_DISPLAYED_VERSION:1.0]
both are marked as "required" by the wiki (https://www.dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Info.txt_file)
I have no idea what "required" means since the mod is obviously working without those lines, but maybe it can make the mod usage a bit more stable or at least help to avoid some arcane troubles for some rare users or anything. Again, no idea, I just stumble upon it while going through all mods I have installed and checking for everything irregular to identify the ones that was the cause of the world generation crash. I already found the most likely suspects and this mod is not one of them. But I am a professional QA and just cannot not tell about an issue I found =)

Presumably, other types of wax could be added & used (bayberry wax from bayberries in a farmer's workshop). There's a lignite wax, but it wasn't extracted until the 1800s & the process uses hydrocarbon solvents, so it's probably not worth adding to the game.
you can technically cook with it but chefs usually dont select it as an ingredient at all because of weird coding
I've used this mod in my new fort and it's been a real treat. I don't think I can play without it now lol
I look forward to seeing whatever else you decide to do!
Soap in DF is well implemented already, as it resembles historical recipes that people once used to make soap. Fat (oil or tallow) and ash (lye)
Might find another way to use wax though, I was thinking about that. It would probably be in a separate mod
