The thing about game engines and 3d projections is that unless you give some visual references for your brain to click with, it's quite difficult to really tell the scale of things. This is true to an extent in real life, too, especially in giant open environments with very broad features... such as a desert or a glacial plane; however, your spacial perception is aided a bit in the real world by both parallax as you move and the stereoscopy of images assembled between your eyes, not to mention the actual physical sensation of effort in traversing a space.

In the case of this map, it's both a giant broad-featured space with few reference points and a 3d projection where you have only one "eye", so it's very difficult to really tell that it's very big, especially when you can't see the limits of the real space. There are small maps that feel bigger than this one just because they're constructed with plenty of reference points for your brain to hook onto and use as a measure of depth and relative displacement.

No matter how big I made this map, even if I could break the spacial limits, it wouldn't start to feel really "big" until it was about 6 to 8 times the area of this map (roughly how much space there would be if you included the projection from the 3d skybox) the way it is now, because you'd begin to switch from an external spacial reference to an internal temporal reference trying to traverse it.

In other words, unless it takes a really long time to cross a space, you can't really even get a sense for how big it is unless you have objects in that space to give it milestones for how far apart things are.

@ƒjøx, That's a screenshot of the map in Hammer. The simple answer is that the map has quite literally reached the x-axis limit. They can't make it even bigger.
