Thats actually not a bad idea. I'll add a shutter on top because i feel the quick access is helpful too.

Another tidbit worth adding I think, is that I placed a 1x1 shutter on the roof for easy access to the pilot's seat and have been very surprised how often I use it to enter the ship. I absolutely love the ability to exit into the ship rather than other cockpits dumping you into an exposed position. This ship is an absolute monster and a joy to fly!

I changed the seat to the other 1,1,3 version and it seems much better. I've noticed that being in 1st person rather than 3rd when exiting effects the direction it places you but inconsistently. I also tweaked some of the blocks around there which helped a bit. I'm really liking the ship. Sorry I seemed so pessimistic.

ok I tested a few more times @InventiveExile. The issue is repeatable in space at a certain angle. I will have a fix for this within the hour. Thanks for bring it to my attention!

I tested this several time and would be exited out behind the seat every time Minus once or twice every hundred attempts because i know there's issues with pilot seats on small craft. Even the one or 2 times i exited the side crouching would allow me to move. Sorry if it gave you trouble @InventiveExile :(

Would be a great ship if I could exit the pilot seat and leave the ship without needing to enter god mode.
