That's because you were targetting an entity with no prefab (or an ID), very likely an issue from another mod.
Anyway hotfix 0.0.12 should blacklist such entities.

[Bug report]
In Maxwell's rebuild beta,Maxwell can't cast spells.
I don't know why, but after investigation, it is related to this mod.
