Also, another thing, if the folder isn't there, then just make a folder in the maps folder named "thumb" minus the quotations. Also export in PNG. It'll look the cleanest.

Map icons are actually quite easy to make yourself. Just get paint.net or any free photo editing software and know the Garry's Mod folders. If you can't find them, click the little gear on the game page in your game library, click Manage, and then browse game files. Then, just take a screenshot of any map you're in, go to your screenshots folder, crop it to a square, resize it to 512x512 or 256x256, name it the exact name of the map, and then put it in the thumb folder in the Garry's Mod maps directory. Sounds like a lot to do just for a map picture, but it all is rather fast once you get the hang of it.

Could you make it something like how minecraft makes map icons? like take a picture for when you load in the map or even let the player chose it while in the map and it will automatically set it to the map icon instead of having to use a handmade list.
