For stability, I think some people use one of the hover/flight aligner/assist scripts to give their mech a helping hand. e.g. Flight Assist script only needs a block group with control/cockpit and gyro. Hover Aligner (or one of the simpler ones by that author) uses thrusters in addition to the above.
