If the described "substitution method" doesn't work, you can try it with RON instead.

This doesn't seem to spawn any kind of sign or shelter for stations; am I missing something?

I tried following the instructions above with replacing an existing road too, but that also didn't work.

... technically it should work with every station. The "magic" happens on the tracks and you you do is just swapping the station tracks. ;)
