Canonically, the minions in the motion picture were in self-imposed exile in Siberia between 1812-1968, they were in hiding after committing high treason by murdering the Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. However, there is evidence that suggests some subgroups of the main minion gens broke off during the event. They were scattered all throughout Europe. As such, it can be concluded that different minion subgroups which fractured from the main body, were employed by different villains during the early 20th century. Although, there is no conclusive evidence whatsoever that the minions or a faction of the minions served in the Third Reich, there is photographical proof that the minions were being deployed for coastal naval mine clearance operations by either the Axis as penal battalions or the Allied forces as prisoners of war.
