MEIOU and Taxes is much much much more complex. If you enjoy dealing with constant corruption, the rise of semi-autonomous nobles, and micromanagement, then MEIOU is for you. Don't get me wrong, it's really good. It's fiercely complicated, however.
Vertias is much closer to vanilla gameplay. It tends to fix and expand rather than overhaul. It's a lot less chaotic. If you enjoy dealing with the "high end" problems and leaving the little stuff to abstraction, then VeF is for you.
I have both and run either depending on how I feel like playing. They're both well done.
That way, I could play on other maps with all the VeF goodness!
