The Exo-Mek may look like it's on fire, but if it's anything like my experience, it just means that you over-taxed the laser weapon until it overheated. And when that happens, it kicks you out and shuts down. If you wait a number of minutes (I forget how long), then it should be back to normal and you can pilot it again.
Obviously, it's not only annoying but potentially very dangerous to get kicked out of an Exo-Mek in the middle of combat. To prevent this, keep a close eye on the heat bar at the bottom of the screen. Once it approaches the limit, you should avoid use of the laser until it cools down. In the meanwhile you can still attack with punches; that, or just run and jump around until the bar recovers enough.
