The atmosphere you hit is amazing to be sure, but from a replayability standpoint (which by random encounters is a definition of that intent) the lighting is lacking in this regard.
The briefcase glows as an objective again. The player reaches out - Now there is another random enemy added to the mix. Each time, one more, one more, until at some point the player is facing a strange menagerie of many various foes from earth, from xen, from the combine, all fighting one another, but you are always their target. Alone, you reach out to the briefcase for the twenty-fifth time.... will you make it, again?
I love abandoned hotel environments and this one is well done
This would be so perfect for some kind of the "White Forrest Inn" - ambush from HL Ep 2.
Maybe, Alyx has a breakdown with her car right at the Hotel, inside zombies are waiting. As soon as she finds some gas (props) for the car (shutting down a force field), Combine start to shoot from the outside through the windows, they get inside after a while...
Something like that would be really great
I have 2 minor comments. First, there are some ferns growing in the mechanical room, but they have no access to daylight - perhaps add a window, or a collapsed section of ceiling or wall that would let water and daylight in for the ferns - similar to what you did with the pool area. Second, I love that you can see out of the windows to an outdoor terrace, but is there anyway to obscure your view to the woods more (too dark to see far away from the house)? Perhaps make the outside darker, but have a source of light near the terrace?
