Go to your saved worlds > world options > advanced settings (I think it's called?) > "Enable SuperGridding".
Both the alligator and gorilla use this "glitched" seat that is only available with SuperGridding.
Press [1] to start moving. The mech will move forward (steer with your mouse) until you press [2] (Stop). You might have to press [2] again in case you missed the timeframe (mysterious, I know).
If you don't have a seat, you'll need the "Enable SuperGridding" -world option, which is set up using the world menu.
As a side note: if the mech moves its legs extremely slowly, try pressing [9].
