This is for sure the placeholder bat. The metal one is beta/pre-release, before the idea to make the bat a pre order bonus.

This is as far as I know just a placeholder model until the final assets where ready. The texture is still in the game along with the texture for the Pyro's axe from TF2, which i assume was also used as a placeholder. His bat would fall under beta I suppose, as this was never intended for the final game.
